"U.S. Bill Takes Aim at Global Disease Outbreaks"

Reuters Health Information Services (www.reutershealth.com) (04/10/03); Rovner, Julie

Legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate this week would create the "Global Pathogen Surveillance Act," which would provide $150 million in funding to help developing countries link to the World Health Organization's global surveillance network.  The measure, which was passed by the Senate last year but was not considered by the House, will likely receive more attention and possible approval due to the recent outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS.  Helping developing countries more effectively monitor diseases will help other nations detect and contain disease outbreaks before they spread to other parts of the world.
