Only 35 Americans have become sick enough to be considered "probable" cases of severe acute respiratory said, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday.

The Atlanta-based agency made the sharp cut in the number of cases to bring American counts of the disease in line with definitions used by the World Health Organization. Before the change, the American case count was 208.
