“Rubella Persists in France Despite Vaccine Available”

Agence France Presse (www.afp.com/english/home) (05/19/03)

A new report indicates that cases of rubella are still being reported in France, despite the availability of an effective vaccine against the disease.  The Bulletin Epidemiologique Hebdomadaire shows that there were 38 cases of rubella among pregnant women in 2002, resulting in six births where the children had deformities, two miscarriages, and eight women who terminated their pregnancies.  Almost all of the women were under the age of 30, which leads health professionals to believe that some children are still not receiving the rubella vaccine.  Statistics show that just 84 percent of France's citizens have been vaccinated against rubella.
