HARKIN STATEMENT ON SENATE CONSIDERATION OF HOMELAND SECURITY
LEGISLATION
"When it comes to homeland security, our first and only goal should
be protecting the American people, not providing cover for special
interests. Yet, with the completion of the Homeland Security bill
within reach, the White House and House Republicans chose to place
the special interests ahead of the national interest by adding a
long list of special interest payoffs to drug companies. One of the
worst of these items would provide legal protections to a drug
company that used a mercury-based additive in their vaccines which
may have caused autism in children. While an amendment I supported
to remove these provisions was unsuccessful, I intend to sponsor
legislation when the Senate returns to remove early Christmas gifts
from the Republican leadership to their favorite special interests,"
said U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA).

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
