China uplifts independent anti-SARS vaccine R&D - Chinese scientists have
reported significant improvement in vaccine research and development. A leading
researcher cites the example of an anti-SARS vaccine, developed in just nine
months, to explain what's behind the success of the independent work. In the
past, almost all vaccines manufactured in China modeled western countries'
products. But the situation has changed greatly as far as an anti-SARS vaccine
is concerned. Project Manager Yin Weidong says it's the first anti-SARS vaccine
developed in China and first ever used in clinical tests in the world . -

Winnipeg
expert excited by findings of investigation of Chinese SARS cases - Canadian
Press via www.canada.com - "Maybe CBS ought
to contemplate yet another spinoff of its hugely popular CSI: Crime Scene
Investigation franchise. They could call it CSI: Winnipeg...That's because
Health Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg is the base for Dr.
Heinz Feldmann, virologist and expert in the environmental sources of infectious
disease transmission."

Shot in the arm: the chiropractic dispute over childhood vaccinations - CBC
News - "Who hasn't heard the media message to get a flu shot? After SARS, a lot
of us are pretty scared of getting sick. But not everyone. Some people are
more concerned about the risk of severe side effects from getting
vaccinated...They're arguing that children should not be vaccinated for anything
- not measles, whooping cough, diphtheria, not even polio."

can cure SARS' - www1.mid-day.com
- "As SARS cases reappear and reseachers work overtime to contain the virus,
Indians doctors say the cure could lie in ancient 'nosode therapy' and
homeopathy...According to a paper published in the Indian Journal of Clinical
Physiology (IJCP), SARS can be effectively cured by using an ancient 'Nosode
Therapy' which uses the patient's own pooled serum. It is a type of isotherapy
which involves the preparation of medicine from the patient's own blood, after
diluting it...Nosode therapy is an established therapy for treatment of most of
the diseases in animals."

Bird flu could be worse than SARS
- Aljazeera.net - "The bird flu spreading through Southeast Asia could turn out
to be far more devastating than SARS if it links up with human influenza, an
expert said on Wednesday...'The
pandemics that occured in the previous century, the 20th century, were really
devastating, especially the Spanish flu. We had that in 1918 and 40 million died
of that. We should worry. It kills. It kills.'"
Comment: Here we go.

SARS may not be alone
- Antibodies to a SARS-like virus hint at repeated
infections. - Nature - "A virus similar to that responsible for severe
acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) infected people in Hong Kong 18 months before
SARS reared its head, a recent study says. But some experts say the result is
tentative and needs to be confirmed by larger studies...The result suggests that
the leap from animals to humans was not a one-off event, infectious-disease
experts say...In most cases, these coronaviruses probably infect human cells
only weakly, perhaps triggering a passing sniffle. Zheng believes that the SARS
virus mutated in animals or humans so it can readily jump between people,
generating the potentially fatal infection."
