committee votes to kill immunization bill - AP via Charleston Daily Mail -
"A bill that would have allowed parents to refuse to have their children
immunized for religious reasons was killed by a House subcommittee...A House
Health and Human Resources subcommittee voted 6-1 to postpone indefinitely
consideration of the proposal, preventing further legislative action on it this
year."

Immunization controversy: Should colleges require the bacterial meningitis
vaccine? - The Stanford Daily - "'I dont think it would be a good policy to
require the vaccine,' said Dr. Ira Friedman, who works at Vaden. 'A vaccine
should be required only when its benefits far outweigh its costs, in dollars and
otherwise. This is not the case for the meningococcal vaccine. Thats why public
health authorities support an educational approach.'...However, other medical
professionals disagree with Friedmans opinions and claim that there is no
significant reason not to get the meningitis vaccine. According to the CDC, the
vaccine proves 85 to 90 percent effective against the most common strains, with
rare side effects of mild redness or slight fever."

Immunization
Exemption Debated in W.Va. House - The Intelligencer and Wheeling
News-Register - "Tucker pointed out West Virginia and Mississippi are the only
two states in the nation that do not have the possibility of such exemptions in
their immunization laws, but Mercer said he does not see that as a downside for
the state...'That does not mean we're the two backward (states). We're the two
forward ones,' Mercer said, adding that some states are looking at reversing
their exemptions."

Jacksonville Parents File Claim in Vaccine Court (includes video) - First
Coast News - "'The cover-up from all this just drives me crazy.'...It's a
massive cover-up, says Jacksonville mother Cindy Hartman. She's referring to the
potentially damaging effects of a preservative once commonly used in childhood
vaccinations. That preservative, thimerosal, is 49.6 percent mercury, one of the
most toxic substances on the planet."

Religious exemption worries Ripley mother
- Sunday Gazette-Mail - "'How can these groups call themselves
pro-life and pro-family if taking a moral stand against abortions performed in
the 1960s takes precedence over protecting the lives of those with weakened
immune systems today?' she asked."
Comment: As I said in my 2002
speech:
"Public
Health will say that these vaccines must be mandatory or these diseases will
spread. But if the vaccines work, anyone choosing them will be protected. If
they dont prevent the spread of the disease to the vaccinated, what is the
point? It hardly seems right that those who dont want to be vaccinated should
be required to be vaccinated, because vaccines dont always work...And to
whatever extent vaccines are being required because the immune suppressed
cannot be vaccinated, and are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of disease,
while my heart goes out to such people, they are not more important than
children who are harmed by vaccines. Nor should the notion that vaccination may
in itself be creating immune suppression be left out of this equation...Besides
there is documented proof of outbreaks in 100% vaccinatedpopulations.
Now, whose fault is that?"

Parents lobby to ease immunization laws - St. Louis Post-Dispatch - "The
same vaccines that many credit with ushering in a public health miracle were a
curse to 4-year-old Caleb Mueller, his father believes...Keith Mueller of Kansas
City blames a batch of state-mandated vaccines with causing a severe allergic
reaction in his son when the boy was just over 1. Today, the father is certain
that his son's autism is tied to the shots, as well...Mueller is joining several
parents rights advocates this year to support bills in the Missouri Legislature
that would make it easier for parents to exclude their children from
immunizations."
►February 26, 2004 - Immunization
bill passes Senate - AP via Charleston Daily Mail - "Senators passed a bill
that would expand mandatory immunizations for public school students while for
the first time allowing them to decline shots for religious reasons."
Comment: It is
not clear from this whether or not the ambiguous wording in the bill re:
homeschoolers (i.e., can they be charged with a misdemeanor and fined for not
vaccinating?) has been dealt with.

Give us the choice of vaccines - Letters to the Editor - The Telegraph, UK -
"Have you any idea how frustrating it is to read or listen
to the reams of opinion on the MMR debate and to feel that last on the list of
importance are the very children damaged, as their parents believe, by the
vaccine?...But deep down there is utter desolation that something that is of
paramount importance in our lives is like a toy being batted back and forth. Who
was to know what a hot political potato this would turn out to be?"

Resisting child immunization leads to prosecution - Prof - GNA via
www.ghanaweb.com - "Professor
Agyeman Badu Akosa, Director-General of the Ghana Health Services (GHS) on
Wednesday said every child must be immunized against Polio in the forthcoming
immunization exercise, warning that legal action would be taken against any
individual or organisation that would prevent a child from being immunized...He
said it was within the laws of Ghana that all children under five years old in
each house or community should be immunized against polio to guarantee that
Ghana became polio free."

Social workers 'right to question parents' - This is London - "The
row over the MMR "witch-hunt" deepened today as social workers defended their
right to interview the mothers of autistic children...They insisted some parents
could be harming their children to draw attention to themselves, and admitted
subjecting one mother to an eight-week investigation before accepting she had
done nothing wrong...It came after the Evening Standard revealed up to 20
parents of autistic children faced accusations that they were suffering from
Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy."
Comment: It's hard
to believe this could be happening given that Roy Meadows, who has
now been discredited,
was the champion of this apparently ill-conceived theory. How much tragedy
and suffering must the parents of autistic children endure? (And any old
excuse in an attempt to detract from the real issue, i.e., does MMR contribute
to autism?)

Homeschoolers fight state legislation that criminalizes parents who

"Commented Euteneuer
in a statement: "Along with Mississippi, West Virginia is the only state to
forbid religious vaccine exemptions. This bill goes even further by prohibiting
physicians from granting medical exemptions according to what they believe is
best for each patient. Senate Bill 439 would also make West Virginia the only
state to force homeschoolers to be immunized."

I
am further troubled that the author does not provide evidence or references to
substantiate her claim about the alleged danger of vaccines while her message
contributes to misinformation about vaccines. Readers should beware of
journalists who play doctor and instead entrust the care of their children to
qualified and trained healthcare professionals."

Discussion in Scottish Parliament re: Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccine
and "To ask the Scottish Executive, in light of
the Irish Government's decision to fund nearly £500,000 of scientific research
into creating a safer MMR vaccine, what its position is on whether calls for
further research into MMR should be resisted. (S2O-1256)...Alex
Neil (Central Scotland) (SNP): I suggest that the minister read "A
Public Enemy" by Ibsen, in which a character was in the same position as the
minority of scientists and was proved to be right...Given that there is no
conclusive evidence that MMR contributes to or causes autism, does the minister
accept that there is no absolutely conclusive evidence that it does not? Is it
not time for the Executive to take a more humane and flexible approach to the
problem until there is conclusive evidence one way or the other?...Mr
McCabe: I stress that the approach of the Executive is not only humane
but based on the best principles of public safety and health. I suggest to Mr
Neil that he think carefully before making the kind of statements that can cause
confusion for parents of young children and possibly drive down the uptake of
the vaccines. When the uptake is driven down to a point at which an outbreak is
possible, we will all have the opportunity to reflect on what we have said."
►January 28 - February 3, 2004 - A
Violation of Rights (Reflections & Observations) - Santa Monica Mirror -
"The thing about experts is that they often disagree with each other, and, on
the fluoride question, there are experts who allege that fluoride is toxic, as
well as experts who allege that its safe...We dont know how many residents
want fluoride in their water, and we dont think it matters, because this is not
a question that can or should be decided for all of the people by some of the
people. Nor do we know whether fluoride is good or bad for people, and were not
sure anyone does. But we believe that every one of us has the right to choose
what he or she will ingest, and we also believe that the government city,
county, state or federal does not have the right to force-feed anything to
people."

of Vaccine Bullies - commentary -
www.cnsnews.com - "Why on earth should we
vaccinate our newborn baby against Hepatitis B, a virus virus that is contracted
mostly through intravenous drug use and sexual contact?...That is the question
my husband and I had for the doctors and nurses at the hospital where our son
was born two and a half months ago...We didn't get very good answers."
Comment: BL Fisher (of NVIC) note: "This
young Mom learned what many of us have experienced over the years: strong arm
tactics are being used by doctors and public health officials to harass and
intimidate well informed mothers who want to make independent vaccine choices
for their children. The paternalistic physician model is being rejected by
educated health care consumers. We are tired of having doctors tell us
what to do without being given accurate, truthful and unbiased information about
a medical intervention that carries a risk of injury or death for us or our
children."
►January 26, 2004 - Make
vaccine voluntary - editorial - Army Times - "Five years after the Defense
Department began forcing service members to roll up their sleeves for the
anthrax vaccine, the battle over whether the shots are safe, effective or even
legal still rages...But theres another question that gets far less attention:
Has anyone reassessed the potential threat that prompted the vaccine program in
the first place?...More than eight months after major combat operations ended in
Iraq, U.S. officials have failed to find a single drop of the thousands of
gallons of anthrax supposedly stockpiled by Saddam Hussein."

'Supervaccines'
Developed To Combine Childhood Shots - Required Vaccines Cover 10 Diseases
With Multiple Shots -
www.thebostonchannel.com - "For a lot of parents, keeping track of their
children's immunizations can be a full-time job. The mandatory number of
vaccinations covers 10 diseases with multiple shots, and according to health
experts, that number may double over the next decade."
Comment: The number of
mandatory vaccinations "may double over the next decade"? When is enough going
to be enough? When are parents going to "just say no" to vaccines?
Comment: Whether or not vaccines can be safely
combined has not been adequately tested, either in the long or short-term. But
there are clearly reasons to be concerned. For instance, in a 1986 Sciencearticle, when combined in the bodies of mice, two
harmless herpes viruses recombined and killed 62% of the mice.

believes language in a state law that allows students to attend classes without

just a verbal agreement as is permitted now."

Superintendent Karla Brooks Baehr vowed to crack down on students who do not
have all their required immunizations...Only 92 percent of the student body is
up to date on immunizations. School Committee member Regina Faticanti pointed
out at a December meeting that state law requires all students to have complete
vaccinations before entering a classroom, and Lowell has some catching up to
do...Currently, students are allowed to register for school without complete
immunization records, as long as they provide evidence that efforts to get the
vaccinations are under way."
